There aren’t many things quite as lovely as a room full of women, beautiful flowers spread across a table, everyone laughing, creating and trying something new together.
So when May & June was asked to host a flower crown workshop for a hen party in the Brecon Beacons, we were delighted to say yes.
The hen weekend was spread across several days, with the group staying together in a beautiful large property and a full agenda of celebrations planned. Friday evening was to be all things fairy – and what could be more fitting than flower crowns?
And there was an extra little bit of magic: the flower crown workshop was a surprise for the bride. She had no idea what the girls had planned and she was delighted when she discovered what was waiting for her.
Our founder, Sheilagh, walked the bride (and her 18 hens) step-by-step through creating their flower crowns.
One of the best parts of these workshops is getting to choose your own flowers!
Rather than giving everyone a set selection of flowers to work with and guiding the whole group towards the same crown, we like to make our workshops a little more creative.
Each person gets to choose their own flowers – picking out the colours, shapes and textures that catch their eye and building their crown from there.
It means that no two crowns are the same. Instead of following a kit or making a replica of a finished design, you get to experiment, play and create something that feels like you.
Some crowns were delicate and dainty, others were fuller and more abundant – but all of them were completely unique.
We felt so proud watching everyone flutter off into their evening afterwards, flower crowns proudly in place and, in many cases, fairy wings too.
Flowers grown in Wales
For the workshop, we were able to source every single stem from Welsh grower, Jenny Wren Flowers.
We had a beautiful mix of dahlias, statice, zinnias, amaranthus, strawflowers, marigolds, hops, ivy and more – a wonderful mix of colour, texture and scent.
Wherever we can, we choose flowers grown locally and seasonally. Supporting local flower farmers is important to us and so is knowing that the flowers we’re working with haven’t travelled thousands of miles to reach us.
Research has found that the carbon footprint of a mixed bunch of locally grown, seasonal flowers can be just 10% of that of a mixed bunch grown in heated greenhouses or transported by air freight. (Read more: Farm of the Future: Journey to Net Zero, Royal Agricultural Society of England)
